Friends of David Findlay Jr. were devastated to learn of his sudden passing. Dave was a man of extraordinary decency and generosity, devoid of affectation.
The Findlay name looms large in the art world. The Findlay galleries, run by various family members, have long been East Side landmarks.
After two decades in finance, Dave joined his father’s gallery, the David Findlay Gallery on Madison Avenue. But in 1982, he started his own gallery, David Findlay Jr. Fine Art, specializing in American and European paintings and sculpture.
The gallery’s current location is 724 Fifth Avenue (between 56th & 57th Streets), on the 8th floor. The gallery continues to operate under Louis Newman and Lee Potter Findlay, Dave’s daughter.
My most treasured recollection centers on the time Dave and his wife, Mimi, visited my apartment. Upon entering, Dave froze before a painting over my fireplace. It was not a coveted work of art. (I knew that.) It was hung too high.
Dave told me exactly how far to lower it.
I’ll do it. I promise.
